FAQs

How long will I be in detox?

The time it takes to go through Detox varies from person to person, typically lasting about a week or less. The type of substance and overall health are key factors affecting the detox timeframe. For example, detox from alcohol generally lasts 5 to 7 days, while opioid withdrawal may extend to 10 days, and benzo detox can take up to three weeks, requiring a methodical and careful tapering process.

Our team will tailor your detox plan to prioritize your safety and stability before moving on to the subsequent treatment phase. The timeline is adaptable based on your progress, allowing you to proceed as soon as you feel ready and ensuring your health remains a priority.

We offer semi-private rooms for treatment, meaning two people of the same gender share a room.  Our approach calls for interaction with peers, active engagement with groups, and engagement with the clinical and medical team. In order to prevent isolation and other negative coping mechanisms, we want our clients to have one roommate in which to build healthy relationships. Recovery is not a solo journey, neither are 12 step meetings, so our program helps you begin your journey through connection with a roommate!

Having a roommate during rehab can foster support, as you’ll have someone to navigate the journey with. Still, we guarantee everyone has space and time for quiet when necessary. If you have any concerns about rooming situations, please reach out—we aim to ensure everyone is as comfortable as possible.

In our addiction program, individuals usually have at least one personal therapy session each week and several group therapy sessions, adding up to over 50 hours per week of clinical services.  This ensures you or your loved one engages often with counselors and therapists through individual and group work, participates in support group meetings, whether 12 step or faith-based, along with other supportive activities. There will be frequent therapeutic contact – almost daily in groups and weekly in private sessions – for consistent progress throughout treatment.

Absolutely! We promote family involvement as recovery is a collective endeavor, and having loved ones present significantly impacts the process. Midwest Recovery Centers provides opportunities for family members to engage in education and counseling sessions through conference calls with the therapist and client, upon request. Our Substance Abuse program offers a weekly Family Zoom Education course as well as a monthly Family Night educational meeting. With the client’s consent, families can stay updated on progress and assist in aftercare planning. Through their involvement, families can enrich the treatment plan and boost outcomes while the individual concentrates on their recovery.

If someone wants to leave treatment early, our team will address their concerns and discuss their motivations. We will remind them of their goals and progress, and we may involve family members, therapists, nurses and counselors. However, our program is voluntary; adults can leave against medical advice (AMA). We discourage early departure because it not only jeopardizes recovery, but studies indicate that leaving rehab prematurely increases relapse rates.

If a client chooses to sign out early, we will ensure they understand the risks and have a safety plan. Our priority is their well-being, and if they don’t complete the program, we will connect them with resources or outpatient support, although we hope they stay to gain the full benefits of treatment.

We want to start this answer by reminding you that this situation is best handled with the assistance from professionals, like our Admissions team. We are led by clinical standards and educated on intervention methods!

When discussing rehab with a loved one, it’s really important to engage in the conversation with empathy, patience, and a good sense of timing. Choose a private, calm moment when they are sober to engage in this dialogue. Speak sincerely, sharing your concerns and love in a non-judgmental manner. You might say you’ve seen their challenges and genuinely want to assist them. Build trust and facilitate open communication by listening attentively without interruptions.

Prepare for their inquiries by familiarizing yourself with treatment options, such as those available at Midwest Recovery Centers. In some instances, enlisting a professional interventionist can be beneficial. Always remain supportive and non-confrontational, stressing that seeking help is a courageous decision and that you will support them throughout the journey.

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions at the same time. Individuals struggling with addiction often also experience anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, trauma-related symptoms, personality disorders, mood disorders, or other mental health challenges. At Midwest Recovery Centers, our Kansas City mental health program provides comprehensive behavioral health services designed to support both the emotional and psychological aspects of recovery alongside substance use treatment.

Our Iowa location currently focuses specifically on substance use disorder services. Across our programs, we utilize evidence-based therapies, medication management when appropriate, trauma-informed care, nutritional support, personal training, peer and family support resources, and individualized treatment planning to help clients build a strong foundation for long-term healing and recovery. By addressing both substance use and mental health together whenever appropriate, we help individuals better understand the connection between emotional wellness and addiction while creating a path toward lasting stability and improved quality of life.

Detox medications differ based on the substance and individual requirements. Our medical team customizes treatments for your safety and comfort through medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which may involve buprenorphine (Suboxone) or benzodiazepines for alcohol withdrawal. For those undergoing opioid detox, Suboxone can help alleviate cravings and withdrawal discomfort, while alcohol treatment medications help prevent seizures and soothe the nervous system.

We aim to alleviate symptoms and reduce discomfort, offering supportive medications for nausea, sleep issues, and blood pressure as needed. At Midwest Recovery Centers, our dedicated professionals are here for you around the clock, ensuring you receive the essential medications you need throughout your detox journey. All medicines administered are evidence-based, and our team thoroughly explains the process and purpose of each treatment.

We recognize this concern and avoid sharing “war stories” or glamorizing drug use. Recovery groups are led by licensed therapists, following therapeutic guidelines. Clients discuss feelings and solutions, steering clear of substance use details. We highlight shared challenges and encourage healthy insights from experiences. If discussions stray into educating peers about drugs, the staff gently redirect them.

We create a supportive environment focused on healing, not comparisons. While clients may know about drugs, our goal is to build recovery skills together. Ultimately, we want your loved one to find hope and gain valuable recovery insights, not information that could encourage substance use. Our team promotes positive peer interactions to help prevent relapse.

A typical day encompasses a variety of supportive activities aimed at facilitating recovery. Mornings start with a shared breakfast, followed by a group therapy session. Late mornings and afternoons involve workshops on relapse prevention, life skills, and coping strategies. Lunch provides a necessary break. The afternoons may include individual counseling or holistic therapies, such as yoga. Clients participate in physical activities at the gym. Evenings usually consist of 12-step meetings, along with a dinner prepared by the chefs.

Afterwards, clients can either engage in wrap-up meetings or enjoy free time for personal reflection. They may choose to relax by watching a movie or journaling. Our schedule effectively balances therapy with downtime, including group sessions, weekly individual counseling, recovery meetings, wellness activities, and shared meals. This structured yet supportive routine promotes recovery in a balanced atmosphere.

At our center, we embrace a holistic healing approach, integrating physical and recreational activities into our enjoyable program. Clients in the inpatient programs can use our fitness areas. Our yoga classes offer a pleasant, relaxing way to rebuild strength. Clients can engage in music and art therapy, yoga, and recreational activities that support a balanced lifestyle.

Our patients enjoy simple moments, like game nights or movie nights, that bring everyone together. You can look forward to diverse activities, such as gym sessions, outdoor sports, yoga and support group meetings, all of which promote an active life of recovery.

Aftercare planning at Midwest Recovery Centers is a team effort that ensures your success after completing the residential phase. You will be assigned a case manager or care coordinator to organize your aftercare plan. They will collaborate with your therapist, the clinical team, and possibly your family to create a plan tailored to your needs. As you approach completion, your case manager will help with relapse prevention strategies and practical arrangements for life after discharge, including connecting you with outpatient programs, structured housing, follow-up appointments, and local mental health support groups or 12-step meetings. Clients leave with a clear plan—you won’t be alone.

Yes, you can smoke at Midwest Recovery Centers as long as you adhere to the guidelines! We recognize that quitting drugs or alcohol can be difficult, so we do not require clients to stop using nicotine at the same time (though we can support your decision to quit). Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas for safety reasons. Please ensure that your tobacco products are in unopened packaging to maintain safety and avoid contraband, which includes new and sealed cigarettes, chewing tobacco, vape juice, etc.

For safety, our staff will hold e-cigarettes or lighters during certain levels of care, but you’ll still have regular smoke breaks. Smoking is allowed during treatment, but it is scheduled with specific times and designated areas. We will reasonably accommodate nicotine habits, and non-smokers won’t be exposed to smoke-filled environments. Feel free to bring your cigarettes or vape (new, unopened), as many clients smoke here in moderation and the specified areas.

Success in recovery looks different for every individual, and long-term healing is influenced by many factors including continued support, personal commitment, environment, and participation in ongoing care. Across Midwest Recovery Centers’ long-term continuum of care programs in Kansas City, we have seen strong outcomes for individuals who actively engage in treatment, aftercare, and recovery support services. Our long-term programs, which can include up to one year of structured care and support, have shown that many clients are able to maintain sobriety and make meaningful improvements in their quality of life and mental wellness.

Our Iowa location focuses specifically on a 45-day inpatient substance use disorder treatment program designed to help individuals safely stabilize, build recovery skills, and create a strong foundation for continued sobriety. Because recovery is an ongoing journey, we strongly encourage clients to continue with outpatient care, sober support communities, therapy, recovery meetings, and aftercare planning following discharge. While relapse can be a part of the recovery process for some individuals, our team remains committed to providing compassionate support and helping clients reconnect with treatment and recovery resources whenever needed.

Phone access is allowed but limited during inpatient treatment, we allow clients to use their cellphone for two hours per day, and then they have access to the desk phone at all times in the event of emergency usage.

Misuse of this privilege may lead to temporary confiscation of your phone by staff, at any stage of treatment. This approach fosters a supportive therapeutic environment. Many individuals find relief from phone-related stress early in treatment while ensuring that communication with family members is organized. Full phone access will be restored by completing your treatment, facilitating your transition back to daily life.

At Midwest Recovery Centers, we want to reassure you that we are not a religious rehab; our program requires no religious affiliation. We blend evidence-based therapies with various types of support groups, and include a spiritual aspect when necessary. Everyone is welcome here, regardless of their faith, and we also offer optional support from a spiritual counselor. We emphasize broader spirituality—helping you uncover meaning and hope in your recovery journey—rather than focusing on one religion.

Individuals from various Christian, Muslim and Jewish backgrounds find a comfortable environment with us. We’re happy to arrange worship services or connect you with a spiritual leader if you want a faith-based approach. Our program is about respecting your individual beliefs, and we don’t impose any specific doctrines during your recovery process.

No, we do not allow couples into treatment as we have found this can disrupt the therapeutic approach. It’s important to recognize that recovery is not about anything other than doing it for yourself. Many people want to maintain certain relationships that may or may not be healthy and conducive to their recovery. Oftentimes certain relationships have been the reason for relapse, and need to be looked at. At Midwest Recovery Centers, we aim to help each individual to the best of our ability, therefore we do not want any outside distractions.

Our Admissions team will work tirelessly to ensure that you and your loved one will both find treatment. We have formed partnerships with nearby treatment programs that provide very similar clinical programming to MRC. While we do not believe treating couples is a therapeutic process, we do believe in helping both individuals find the help they need!

Visitation is organized and based on your care level. We prioritize your privacy and stability during detox, so we don’t allow visitors at that time. However, once detox is complete, you can enjoy limited visits during residential treatment—typically once a week at designated times. While daily visitors aren’t possible, we believe that family participation is crucial for your healing. Plus, phone calls can keep those important connections alive when in-person visits aren’t an option. Remember to schedule all visits in advance with your therapist and follow our guidelines to ensure a smooth experience!

You may bring your cell phone into treatment. During the inpatient period you will get to use your cellphone for two hours per day. Our staff will keep them secure during non-cellphone time, to help you concentrate on your recovery and building coping tools. Generally, we securely store electronics to minimize distractions and recommend labeling your devices. This policy is designed to improve your treatment experience; many clients find a digital detox helpful. Thus, you are welcome to bring your mobile devices, but please understand that access will only be allowed in later stages.

You don’t need to bring food because we provide meals and snacks throughout the detox and residential treatment. Our kitchen, managed by a nutritionist, offers balanced meals. For safety reasons, outside food is not permitted during detox; however, snacks are available in the residential program. Sober clients can take supervised trips to the store for personal items and snacks.

Pets are cherished family members, but we cannot accommodate them during treatment at Midwest Recovery Centers due to allergy and safety concerns. Plan for your pet’s care by contacting a trusted friend or exploring boarding services that may offer discounts. Consider hiring a pet sitter for daily visits. Although separation can be strict, this will help both of you toward a healthier future. Our Admissions team can help you with contacting AA Place for Dogs to board your pet for 30 days!

Before checking in, shower your pet with extra love and provide caregivers with necessary supplies and instructions. Clients enjoy photo updates, and our staff is here to facilitate this thoughtful touch. Once treatment is complete, you’ll return as a more connected pet parent, ready to enjoy life free from addiction. Organize your pet’s care ahead of time to focus entirely on your recovery journey.

We can assist with that. When you arrive, we will inquire about your dietary preferences, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free options, or any food allergies. Our nutritionists and medical providers are here to help with meal planning and tailoring the menu to your needs. For vegetarians, we provide meatless protein sources and various vegetables. Gluten-free clients will have access to safe grains while we take precautions to prevent cross-contamination.

We cater to various dietary restrictions, such as kosher and lactose-free diets. Please inform the admissions or nursing staff about your requirements so the kitchen can prepare suitable meals during detox and residential stays.

Please communicate any supplements or special shakes you require; we can easily accommodate those. Our focus is on nutrition and hydration, which are crucial for your recovery, and we strive to meet your dietary needs effectively.

You do not need to bring any cash or money in any form when you come into MRC. The program covers any and all basic needs during your stay. We provide everything you will need while in treatment. Any tobacco products should be purchased beforehand and brought in their respective packages unopened.

If you run out of tobacco products, we do allow your family to bring more supplies for you. They can coordinate with the medical staff and leave products with the staff at the front entrance.

Traveling can be challenging, but our admissions team is happy to help arrange transportation for local residents and even for those living a few hours away. We utilize Uber Health, and at times, when available, our staff can pick you up from your home or a convenient spot. If you’re arriving from outside the city or at the nearest airport, inform us of your arrival time, and a friendly staff member will greet you at baggage claim. We also provide transport for bus or train arrivals. If you’re traveling from far away, we can arrange transportation services or coordinate with a family member. We prioritize safe and timely admissions because transportation shouldn’t hinder your treatment. Our services are available 24/7, including nighttime admissions. Don’t hesitate to ask for transportation assistance—we’re here to support you!

At Midwest Recovery Centers, we understand that health insurance plays a crucial role in accessing treatment for substance use and mental health issues. We help you explore your options and collaborate with various insurers to confirm detox and residential care benefits. Major insurers such as UHC, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UMR, GEHA, Allied, Tricare and Anthem typically offer rehab benefits, and we’re here to assist you through the process. We work with all major private insurance carriers, please reach out today to talk more with our Admissions team for exact quotes!

For those uninsured or underinsured, we provide private pay options and flexible plans. Federal parity regulations ensure that addiction treatment is regarded in the same way as other medical conditions. Checking your coverage is both free and confidential! We take care of the pre-authorization paperwork and have a wealth of experience with Employee Assistance Programs and union benefits, allowing you to concentrate on your recovery journey.

Feel free to reach out to our admissions team at any time to talk about the intake procedure for our program. We handle issues related to substance use and mental health, and are here to help 24/7. A pre-assessment will determine if our program fits your needs and whether detoxification or stabilization is necessary. If everything is in order, we will often schedule your admission for the same day. Please contact our admissions coordinators regarding any packing questions before arrival. Clients from the area can opt for a facility tour.

The intake process includes a phone call, assessment, optional in-person meetings and tours, as well as planning logistics such as transportation and payment. It is followed by on-site intake, which requires completing paperwork, signing consent forms, undergoing a drug test, and having a nursing evaluation. You can start treatment voluntarily; counseling might ease concerns for your loved ones. We also assist with transfers from hospitals or other facilities.

We provide semi-private rooms, which are gender-based and assigned by similar diagnoses. We believe that isolation is part of the problem when it comes to substance abuse and mental health disorders. We believe in a holistic and comprehensive approach, that is held together by communication and connection. It’s important to us that each patient feels a sense of community and empathy, from both staff and other clients in our care. Recovery typically involves building healthy and lasting relationships with others that have the same goal of long term recovery, whether from addiction or mental health disorders. This is why two clients to each room is an important part of the design of our program.

Engaging with your employer about leave can be daunting, but it’s important to prioritize your privacy. You might start by simply stating, “I need medical treatment for a few weeks.” If you feel at ease, share more information based on your office’s culture. Remember that seeking treatment is legally protected, preventing discrimination from employers. If you qualify, the FMLA allows for up to 12 weeks off with assurance that your job remains secure for medical reasons. Just inform HR about your leave and our Medical team will submit the necessary FMLA documentation regarding your situation and needs. This will both build legitimate rapport with your employer, protecting your job, while also maintaining strict confidentiality, as we are accredited through Joint Commission.

Please call our Admissions team to learn more about how to have this difficult conversation with your employer!

In the meantime, start the conversation with remarks such as, “my doctor advises medical leave, and I have documentation for HR.” If they ask more, remind them of your confidentiality while stating your intent to return after recovery. Saying “medical treatment” may suffice without detailing rehab. Some prefer transparency, and many employers appreciate a proactive approach. Always notify HR about your medical leave.

We can help with a medical leave letter to ensure your privacy. It’s important to assert your need to manage your health using HR and FMLA resources, as treatment is a valid reason for leave that employers should understand. Discuss this matter professionally to encourage a supportive response. Timing your follow-up at work can also improve the process. Always prioritize your health; it will boost your performance when you return.

Taking medical leave is your right, and firing someone for it is often illegal if proper protocols are followed. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave for medical reasons, including treatment for substance use disorders. If you qualify, your job is safe during rehabilitation, and employer retaliation is prohibited. Smaller companies may also offer support with their policies.

To ensure your protection, notify your HR department in order to obtain the necessary documentation. Once you enter our program, our Medical team at Midwest Recovery Centers will fill out all the documentation to formally request your leave. Being fired after taking approved leave could violate labor laws. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects individuals in recovery from discrimination. Employers can respond to impairment or policy violations before seeking help, but they typically support employees undergoing treatment, valuing a healthy workforce.

Many clients successfully take leave without job loss and are respected for seeking help. Review your employee handbook or discuss medical leave options with HR for clarity. You deserve protection from termination during approved leave. We can assist with documentation and communicate with your employer if concerns arise. Seeking recovery is a valuable investment in your career. Consider checking your company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for support with treatment leaves.

If you need to take medical leave for rehab, here’s a simple process to follow:

Notify HR: If your company has 50 or more employees or a medical leave policy, tell HR or your supervisor that you’re taking medical leave. You don’t have to share details about your condition.

Complete FMLA Paperwork: HR will give you the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) forms to fill out with your healthcare provider. This form must confirm the length of your treatment and your inability to work. Please submit it to HR as soon as possible for approval.

Understand Pay: FMLA leave is usually unpaid, but you may be able to use sick days or short-term disability benefits for pay during your leave.

Short Term Disability: This is a benefit many companies offer, and many people pay into this benefit. This will help cover a portion of your pay while you are off and not working. This can help to navigate bills while you are focusing on your recovery!

Personal Leave: If you don’t qualify for FMLA, you can request personal medical leave. Provide documentation from your healthcare team and talk to HR about your time off.

Get Approval: Ensure you get all approvals in writing. Schedule a meeting with HR to discuss your return. Expect to take 4 to 6 weeks of leave for inpatient rehab. FMLA allows up to 12 weeks if needed.

Keep Informed: Keep your supervisor updated about handoffs of your work and focus on your recovery.

HR Check-ins: HR may check in occasionally but usually gives you space while you’re away. You might need your doctor’s “fit for duty” note when you return.

Our clients range in age from 18 to over 60. They are mainly adults in their late 20s to 40s, especially those in their 30s. We also accept seniors (65+) and occasionally clients in their 50s or 60s. The groups vary in age, with some younger and others including retirees. In therapy, age differences can help recovery, as younger clients find peers, and older clients often mentor them.

The average client is in their mid-30s, and we do not treat minors, creating a mature environment. While some might worry about age diversity, it adds value to the treatment experience. Oftentimes the most unlikely friendships can create the most lasting and permanent bonds that enhance quality of life.

We may organize discussions by life stage, but integration is essential. Activities are designed for adult enjoyment, steering clear of a party-like feel. Substance use disorders are more common among those in their late 20s to early 30s, and the opioid epidemic has brought in more younger clients. Alcohol use disorders can also affect people over 50, while mental health disorders do not discriminate amongst age.

Our therapists hold advanced degrees, including master’s in counseling. Our Clinical Director is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and holds her Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC), and many staff members are Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) or Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs). We also have a spiritual counselor with a master’s in religious science and many Nurse Practitioners involved in overseeing medical care.

Counselors blend their recovery experiences with certifications, using proven methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) along with other forms of Trauma-Informed Care. Our team focuses on continuous development in addiction treatment practices as well as mental health disorder treatment and advancement of building healthy coping tools. While some facilitators may have bachelor’s degrees or are peer support specialists, key therapies are led by licensed master’s level professionals, ensuring a low client-to-therapist ratio for personalized care.

Specialized professionals, including trauma experts, are available on staff or as consultants, ensuring competent care in substance abuse and mental health counseling. Our multidisciplinary team comprises the clinical director, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, collaborating psychiatrist, collaborating physicians, master’s level counselors, certified counselors and nurses for comprehensive treatment.

Yes, we provide thorough medical oversight. Addressing substance use and mental health requires essential medical support, especially during detox and for clients with health concerns. Our facility has a 24-hour detox/residential center nursing and an on-call physician for medical needs. A licensed nursing staff monitors vital signs and administers medications.

An on-call medical provider is available for emergencies and evaluates clients at admission, as are on-site nurse practitioners for check-ins and evaluations. They create detox protocols for optimal care. For complex issues, our Medical Director utilizes a holistic approach. We provide medication management for mental health and substance use disorder needs.

Our nursing staff also manages chronic medical conditions. With 24/7 nursing support, we are always prepared to address issues and respond quickly to emergencies.
